The director of Public Safety is the administrative head of the public safety forces in Whitehall. The safety director is appointed by the mayor and is the appointing authority responsible for the oversight of the Division of Police and the Division of Fire, which includes Emergency Medical Services.
Director Charles Underwood was appointed in 2012 by Mayor Kim Maggard and previously held elected offices in Whitehall as City treasurer, City attorney, and City councilman. Director Underwood is a private practice attorney and also works at Flight Safety International re-qualifying pilots. Director Underwood is also a retired Colonel in the Air National Guard where he flew KC135 refueling missions in Desert Storm and in Vietnam.
