What is the function of the City Auditor?
The City Auditor serves as the City’s Chief Financial Officer and is responsible in a manner consistent with applicable laws, policies, plans and procedures. To accomplish this goal, the City Auditor performs various functions including but not limited to the following:
* Certifying the availability of City funds prior to approval of City commitment
* Processing and monitoring disbursements which total over $20 million dollars annually
* Operating and maintaining the City’s financial management system
* Producing an annual financial report.
* Internal Auditing of departments and/or employees.
* Ensuring that all accounting procedures follow city, state and federal laws.
Does the City Auditor vote on issues before City Council?
No. Although an elected official, the City Auditor does not vote on matters presented to City Council. The separation of powers among the City Auditor, the City Council and the Administration were established in the charter to enable the City Auditor to function independently from the other branches of City Government.
Is there free Income Tax Assistance available for federal and state returns? How about City of Whitehall returns?
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives has launched a statewide effort to provide free federal and Ohio income tax return assistance to Ohioans with household incomes below $54,000 per year. The assistance is offered through The Ohio Benefit Bank - a free service that provides help for low and moderate -income Ohioans to claim tax credits and other work support benefits.
