“From the Chief”

As we break the grip of winter’s cold and the summer month’s bloom, we need to keep a few things in mind to safely enjoy the activities the summer months bring.   Remember that children will be playing outside and occasionally they accidentally wander into the street. A moment’s lapse of attention can turn into a life-changing tragedy.  It is also our responsibility as parents to teach our children the importance of not playing in or near the street, and most importantly to know at all times where our children are.

Recent media attention of events in Columbus involving children with guns demonstrates that tragedies can happen when youth have access to guns.  Although these incidents have occurred on the West side and East side of Columbus, we are not immune to the problem.

Children and guns do not mix.  We have received a federal grant to combat youth violence, and we intend to take this issue head-on.  This summer we have funded a Youth Violence Task Force and will put extra officers on the street to enforce the City’s 11:00PM curfew.  We will also use this grant funding to thoroughly investigate any incidents and reports of children with guns to determine how the children gained access to a gun and hold accountable those that are responsible.

Please keep an eye on our website for information on Summer Public Safety Education workshops and seminars.  The seminar topics this summer will focus on internet security for seniors.  Internet scams, cyber-identity theft, and the use of Social networking sites by criminals are a threat to our senior community that can be mitigated through education and awareness. Please join us to learn more about what you can do to prevent these crimes from happening to you.

Thank you for doing your part as a parent, neighbor, and community advocate to keep Whitehall “The City of Pride”.
